Iain spent the first 4 years of his medical degree juggling his time between his studies in the University of St Andrews, sport, socialising and training to become a Commando in the Royal Marines Reserve. Having earned his green beret and his BSc he transferred to the University of Manchester to continue his studies and at this time became a Medical Cadet in the Royal Navy. What followed was a highly varied career which took him to all corners of the globe on both combat operations and peacetime exercises. Some highlights of his career include:
- 6 month deployment on board a frigate in the Far East
- Jungle warfare training as Regimental Medical Officer in 40 Commando
- Highly kinetic combat tour as a frontline doctor in Helmand Province, Afghanistan
- Sailing expeditions to the Caribbean
- Counter-terrorism and hostage rescue activity
- Being a NATO Medical Advisor in Italy during the COVID pandemic
- First UK military doctor trained as a High Altitude High Opening parachutist
